Germany's most contrasting river cycle path offers a cycle tour for connoisseurs and explorers. The cycle adventure map provides ideas for combined tours on the Württemberg Wine Cycle Route and days out in the Neckar metropolises. In addition, you will receive tips on the three adventure worlds Original, Wine Blessed and Romantic Neckar and a “bucket list” with highlights along the two cycle paths that you should not miss.

Excellent Place

The Neckar Valley Cycle Route was named an Excellent Place by the editors of the world's best-selling cult travel guide 1000 Places to See Before You Die, making it one of the top sights in Germany.

30 years Neckar Valley Cycle Route

The Neckar Valley Cycle Route celebrates its 30th anniversary

It all began in 1992 with the first section from the source of the Neckar to Rottweil and the founding of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route office in the town of Villingen-Schwenningen. In 1993, the first package offer “Cycling without luggage” was launched. The cycle path was gradually expanded until the entire route was signposted in 1996. Since then, not only the logo has been further developed. Since 2013, the ADFC Baden-Württemberg has coordinated the office and the marketing cooperation. With a glittering 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ as an ADFC quality cycle route, the Neckar Valley Cycle Route has now become one of the most popular river cycle routes, and not just in the south of the country. We are looking forward to a great cycling season in our anniversary year!

Information on route closures & roadworks

Here you will find an overview of the current closures and detour. These are also listed for the individual stages.
GPX-Track mit dauerhaften Umleitungen

  • As part of two construction measures by the Heidelberg Wastewater Association (fourth purification stage & Neckar culvert), the Neckar Valley cycle path will be closed in the area of the Heidelberg-Neuenheim sewage treatment plant.

From 13.09.2022, the following detour from the Tiergartenbad / Rhein-Neckar Olympic Training Center will be set up as planned for a period of four years:

  • Due to a rock slide, the Neckar Valley cycle path near Hirschhorn has been fully closed since March 2024.

The damaged area is located on the steep slope between the overpass of the B 37 road tunnel and the outskirts of Ersheim. A few meters below the K 4105 (Hirschhorn-Moosbrunn), rocky material had fallen towards the cycle path along the Neckar. Before Ersheim, from the Neckar bridge on the B37, the cycle path is diverted via the L3105 on the right bank.

Another rock slide in July proves that there is still a great danger and that the detour must be adhered to.

Route of the detour on the right bank of the Neckar (purple):

  • Between Mosbach-Neckarelz and Neckargerach, the Neckar Valley cycle path will be diverted to the right side of the Neckar / B37 until fall 2024. The reason for this is the construction of a sewage pressure pipeline between Guttenbach and Mörtelstein. The detour is signposted on site.

Route of the detour on the right-hand side of the Neckar (purple):

  • Due to construction work, the Neckar Valley cycle path between Untereisesheim and Bad Wimpfen will be closed from 10.10.-30.11.24. A detour is signposted via Bad Friedrichshall.

  • From 25.10.2023, the Neckartal cycle path will be closed due to construction work at the Hessigheim lock near the sports facility. The detour will be via the K 1677. In the main season from April to October, signal systems will be installed to facilitate access to the district road.

The entire construction work to renovate the lock dam is expected to last until the end of October 2025.

  • Closure between Mineralbad Leuze and Gaisburg Bridge

For the Rosenstein Tunnel road construction project, work is required on the Neckar Valley cycle path as part of the “B10/B14 - Leuze connection” sub-project. To this end, the cycle path between the Leuze mineral baths and the Gaisburg bridge will have to be closed from March 25 to April 10, 2024.

The cycle path will then be available until fall 2024, but will have to be closed on individual days depending on the work. A detour via the pedestrian and cycle path at Cannstatter Wasen and the other side of the Neckar has been set up.

In this context, the Berger Steg must also be closed, as the access on the Mineralbad Leuze side is in the construction area.

    Plan Umleitungsstrecke

  • Since July 2016, the Neckar Valley cycle path has been closed to cycle traffic between Stuttgart-Obertürkheim and Stuttgart-Untertürkheim until the S-21 construction work is completed, probably in 2027, due to work on the Stuttgart-Ulm rail project. A detour route for cycle traffic via Mettingerstraße, Augsburgerstraße and Hafenbahnstraße has been set up. The route of the detour can be seen here.

Part of the closure has been open to traffic again since the beginning of 2024. Between “In den Stegwiesen” and Imweg, the cycle path runs along the railroad embankment again and crosses under it at the newly built pedestrian underpass to Imweg.

Cyclists who wish to avoid the busy detour can take the S-Bahn from Esslingen to Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt (bicycles can be taken free of charge from 09:00 on weekdays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).

    Plan Umleitungsstrecke

  • Due to the long-term detour in the Obertürkheim area due to S21 construction work, we recommend using Rosenstraße through Mettingen to and from Stuttgart-Obertürkheim and cycling via Augsburger Straße to Imweg:

  • Due to construction work, the Neckar Valley cycle path in the area of Hermann-Kurz-Str. and Uferweg is expected to be closed until the end of 2024. A detour via Gartenstraße, which runs parallel to the road, is signposted.

Map of closed section (blue) and detour (red):

  • The Neckartal cycle path is closed in Sulz at the bridge underpass (Rottweiler Straße between the youth center and the fishing club/fishing hut) due to damage and associated construction work and is being diverted onto the road.

As the cycle path in Sulz runs alternately offside and on the bypass, which is currently very busy due to the construction work, increased attention is required here.
