  • The Neckar Valley cycle path can be travelled in both directions. The usual direction of travel is almost ascent-free from the source in Villingen-Schwenningen to the confluence with the Rhine in Mannheim. The 8 daily stages of our package tour also lead downstream. In the opposite direction, there are more metres in altitude to overcome.

  • The Neckar Valley Cycle Route runs alongside the river from the source of the Neckar in Schwenninger Moos near Villingen-Schwenningen to the square city of Mannheim, where the Neckar joins the Rhine. Perhaps the best-known cycle route in Baden-Württemberg is also suitable for beginners, inexperienced cyclists and families with children, including those travelling with a bike trailer. The suggested daily stages can be shortened as required depending on your fitness level.

Due to a few small climbs, only stage 1 from Villingen-Schwenningen to Rottweil is classed as intermediate. The remaining 7 stages are categorised as easy.

  • Throughout the Neckar valley, railway lines run in such a way that travelling by train is easy. There are several railway stations on the cycle route with regular long-distance connections (IC) such as Rottweil, Horb, Tübingen, Reutlingen, Plochingen, Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Mannheim. There are also other railway stations with local transport connections.

You can find out whether your chosen station on the Neckar Valley Cycle Route has a lift, is accessible at ground level and what other services are available in the Stationsdatenbank des Landes Baden-Württemberg.

Here you will find information on the accessibility of the individual platforms, the station's facilities (e.g. ticket machines) and the services available at the station as well as the options for changing to other modes of transport (e.g. bus, taxi, etc.).

  • Some hotels, e.g. in Villingen-Schwenningen or Mannheim, offer car parks for the duration of your cycle tour, some of which are subject to a charge.

You can also find information on public car parks under Arrival and Departure.

  • During the high season, at holiday times or if you are travelling with several people, we recommend booking accommodation well in advance of your cycle tour. Bed capacity is limited, especially in the small towns along the Neckar.

If you are travelling spontaneously or do not want to plan the day's stages in advance, you can also make enquiries with hosts at short notice on the day of arrival, depending on availability. However, you may only find accommodation a short distance from the cycle route.
