Villinger Münster
Our Lady's Minster was built in the 13th century and subsequently extended several times. The two towers date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Nägelin cross and the sculpture 'St James crowning two pilgrims' are particularly worth seeing. The carillon with 51 bells is one of the largest in southern Germany.
Beschreibung
Villingen Minster has been remodelled and extended several times over the course of its history. Originally begun in Romanesque style and completed in Gothic style in 1284 after the town fire of 1271, the cathedral was given its two 50 metre high towers in the 15th and 16th centuries. Baroque elements were added in the 18th century. The church was completely renovated between 1978 and 1982.
Nägelin's cross and 'St James crowning two pilgrims'
The Nägelin Cross has been on display in the north tower chapel of the cathedral since the Second World War, after the Bicken Chapel - home to the image of St James for centuries - was destroyed. The Nägelin cross is said to have miraculous powers. It is Villingen's protective cross and is still highly revered today. A sea of candles at the foot of the cross bears witness to this veneration.
The sculpture 'St James crowning two pilgrims', unique in its depiction, expressiveness and symbolism, is one of the most beautiful and poignant sculptures of the early 14th century. It depicts the Stations of the Cross in seven stages.
