In today's SĂĽdstadt, around 4,900 people live on just under 173 hectares - 70 per cent of which is built on - in a carefully developed and very popular residential area with mostly two-storey detached houses and lots of private green space.
For decades, large parts of the neighbourhood were used for military purposes by the American armed forces, which withdrew completely in 2013. A variety of neighbourhoods are now being created on the sites - with affordable housing, high-quality open and recreational spaces, such as the "Andere" park, which was opened in 2022, an attractive cultural and leisure offering and space for innovative companies as well as research and scientific institutions. The Bergfriedhof cemetery, established in 1842, also enriches SĂĽdstadt and is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Germany.
