Beschreibung
Thanks to its location where the Neckar meets the Rhine, shipping has played a key role for Mannheim for centuries, and today Mannheim boasts one of Europe’s most important inland ports. Giant container ships, loading stations and warehouses give the former workers’ suburb a cosmopolitan flair. As you make your way from the Teufelsbrücke, the oldest existing bridge in the city, through the port area, you will continually cross the water and learn many interesting things about the origins of the industrial culture and the lives and living conditions of the dockworkers. You will discover significant features of Mannheim’s bridges and industrial architecture and get to know the former and current significance of the port for trade and tourism. A final detour will lead you to the Jungbusch district, which is separate from the port area and can only be reached via a connection channel. Where workers and bag carriers once made their homes is now a trendy multicultural neighbourhood that radiates creativity.
This tour can also be booked in German and Spanish.
