Heidelberg's newest neighbourhood is Bahnstadt.
One of the largest passive house estates in the world is currently being built here. The electricity and heat supply comes entirely from renewable energies.
Bahnstadt is also an outstanding science centre: the Bahnstadt Campus alone covers 22 hectares. With the highest birth rate in Heidelberg, it is clear that Bahnstadt is particularly attractive for families and young people.
More than 6,500 people are expected to live there in future, with a further 6,000 working there - primarily in research and science-based companies. The first residents moved into the new district in June 2012.
In April 2024, the new Heidelberg Congress Centre was opened in Bahnstadt, providing a new home for conferences and meetings in the science city of Heidelberg.
