Beschreibung
On the Stuttgart wine hiking trail from Obertürkheim via Uhlbach, Rotenberg and Untertürkheim, you will find much more than just vines and wonderful viewpoints. Everywhere along the way you will find wine taverns, wineries and wine bars. You can also learn about the fascinating history of Stuttgart wine in the Museum of Viniculture and sample delicious wines in the in-house vinotheque. The route leads directly through the vineyards, which is why there are a few inclines to contend with. However, the paths are very easy to walk on and are also suitable for pushchairs and children. The walk takes around 3 hours and is approx. 11 kilometres long. Have fun!
Wegbeschreibung
You start at Obertürkheim railway station. To the left of the station exit, you will see an information sign for the wine trails. Here you can also see which wine taverns are currently open. After the bus stop, turn left across the zebra crossing and walk along Augsburger Straße. At the end of the street, turn right into Uhlbacher Straße. The road climbs steeply here. Villa Kayser (Uhlbacher Straße 7), a beautiful public park, is directly on the left. Shortly afterwards you will see the Zaiß winery with its ‘broom tavern’ Sonnen-Besen. If the ‘broom’ is hanging outside, it means that it is open - so let's go inside!
About 200 metres after the Zaiß winery, turn left into Kirchsteige. After a further 300 metres, you will see the cemetery on the right-hand side. Turn right round a tight bend and continue along the cemetery wall. Follow the next hairpin bend to the left and then turn off to the right, which takes you up a steep climb into the middle of the vineyards. You should definitely take a look to the right into the valley: Here you will find the first viewing point, which offers you a stunning view of Obertürkheim and the Neckar valley.
Keep to the right for the next 800 metres and walk slightly downhill past fruit trees through the middle of the vineyards before you come back to Uhlbacher Straße at the fork in the road. Welcome to Uhlbach! Passing the former Konzelmann winery and the Uhlbach wine press of the winne cooperative 'Collegium Wirtemberg', you come to a large crossroads and stand directly in front of the Museum of Viniculture. If you are hungry and thirsty in Uhlbach, you find some of the best Swabian restaurants in Stuttgart.
Adventure tip: Stuttgart-Uhlbach Museum of Viniculture
With or without a visit to the museum - here you can sample many local wines in the museum's vinotheque. A monthly changing menu provides variety. You also get an exciting insight into the work of the winegrower. You can also ‘sniff’ what wine smells like or find out what a hail pilot does.
When you come out of the wine museum, continue directly to the left and past the parish church of St Andreas. The striking octagonal tower with its colourful glazed bricks characterises the village. If it is open, you should definitely take a look inside.
You can then decide when you leave the village: Do you want to stop off at the ‘Zum Dreimädelhaus’ wine tavern ? Or do you want to continue straight into the vineyards? Then turn left over the bridge behind the winery. Or you can end your tour here and take the number 62 bus back to Obertürkheim railway station.
If you continue straight ahead along the path, you will pass the next viewing point, the ‘Weinberghäusle’ and the ‘Großer Stein’. The best way to enjoy the spectacular view of the vineyards is, of course, to take a short breather on the benches. After about 700 metres, you will come to a crossroad, which you cross.
Follow the left-hand bend of the path and then turn left into Götzenbergstraße. From here you can already see the majestic Sepulchral Chapel on the Württemberg.
At the next junction, turn right round a bend past a table with benches and up a steep climb. After two junctions, continue to the left. If you are not sure whether you are turning at the right bend, you can orientate yourself by the two trees on the corner. There is also a seating area where you can take a breather. Continue right there to the left. A few metres further on is our third viewing point: from here you have a great view of the Sepulchral Chapel and Uhlbach lies in the valley below you - simply idyllic.
At the next junction, walk along to the right and when the hiking trail meets the road, turn right. Now you are only a few steps away from the small village of Rotenberg. If you don't want to miss the Sepulchral Chapel and the phenomenal view from there, turn left at the next junction and follow the signs. If you want to continue straight on, simply cross the crossroads straight ahead. You can also take a shortcut from Rotenberg: the number 61 bus will take you to Untertürkheim station.
Adventure tip: Sepulchral Chapel on the Württemberg
The chapel was built in 1820 by King Wilhelm I as an eternal token of love for his wife Katharina, who died young. The iconic monument is considered the most romantic place in Stuttgart due to its charming architecture.
Once you have crossed the crossroads, follow the pretty little lane through the village. At the cemetery, turn right and follow the road into the vineyards. Keep left at the next junction and turn left immediately afterwards. Here you can turn right to the Diehl winery or continue straight ahead and head straight for the Rotenberg wine press of the cooperative Collegium Wirtemberg. During opening hours, you can also enjoy the Collegium's terrace - and unpack the snacks you have brought with you. The view is one of the most beautiful in Stuttgart!
From now on, the route continues straight ahead. At the forks on the right, you will come to the Warth and Gerhard Zaiss wineries and wine taverns and the Zaiß 'Weinhof'. After about 1 km, the path bends slightly to the left. Cross the Rotenberger Steige here and keep left at the next fork. Follow the next two forks to the right. Directly at the second fork, you will find our fourth vantage point with a fantastic view of Untertürkheim. You can also take a short break on the bench here.
About 400 metres later, you can then decide whether you would prefer to shorten the route or continue further. If you follow the path down the vineyards to the right at the crossroads, you will come to Untertürkheim railway station. Before that, you can sample more of Stuttgart's wines at the cooperative Stuttgart Weinmanufaktur, the Schwarz winery or the VDP winegrower Hans Peter Wöhrwag! And if you get hungry again, it's worth visiting the Maultaschen-Restaurant Alte Kelter. From Untertürkheim station, you can continue your journey on the R11, S1, U4, U13 lines and buses 60 and 61.
To continue walking, simply cross the junction without turning off and keep left at the next fork. Then turn right at the next fork and follow the path until you reach the Obertürkheim cemetery again, from where you are quickly back in the town and thus at the railway station.
Congratulations, you have successfully mastered the wine hike!
