The "Wernau Quarry Lakes" Nature Reserve, located near Wernau in the Neckar Valley, is an area of unspoilt natural beauty and a popular destination for hikers, walkers and ornithologists. Grey herons, kingfishers and little ringed plovers are just a few of the rare species of birds that find sanctuary here in Wernau's nature conservancy gem. Over the past 25 years the nature reserve has developed into the most important ecological area in the Stuttgart conurbation.
Visitors are permitted to walk round the gravel lakes on a footpath but should keep to the marked trails to avoid disturbing brooding and resting water birds.
