Wehrkirche St. Blasius Plochingen
The fortified church of St. Blasius Plochingen is a landmark of the town that can be seen from afar. The late Gothic church on the Kirchberg, surrounded by a defensive wall, was completed in 1488.
History of the fortified church of St. Blasius
As early as 620, the wooden St. Michael's Church stood there - on the old pagan place of worship - which burned down in 1078. Around 1100, the Romanesque Ulrichskirche was built, which was probably destroyed by fire in 1078. In the eighties of the 15th century, work began on the existing building, the new nave was completed in 1481 and the tower of St. Blasius Church in 1488.
The crucifix inside the late Gothic hall church probably comes from the burnt-down Ulrichskirche.
The Romanesque baptismal font with its beautiful sculpted ornaments certainly comes from the Romanesque church.
Worth seeing is the richly decorated pulpit from the early Renaissance around 1520. The beautiful stained glass windows were created by the renowned glass artist Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen in 1999. The "Ulrich window" depicts the patron saint of the previous church, while the "example window" shows an illustration from the Gospel of John. The organ with its 29 stops dates back to 1985.
The vicarage next to the church with its beautiful Renaissance portal from 1611 and the 16th century parish barn are also listed buildings, as is the "Jägerhaus", a former vicar's residence dating back to 1589.
