Enthusiasm for culture in Stuttgart
Stars or Horses? Car fans in Stuttgart don't have to ask this question - because they can easily have both. The Porsche Museum and the Mercedes-Benz Museum are not just an eye-catcher for car enthusiasts; the architecture of the museums alone is worth a visit. When it comes to architecture, Stuttgart once made history: the Weissenhof Estate and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed houses by Le Corbusier still attract connoisseurs and the curious to this day.
And what's more: in no other city in Germany do people go to the theatre, libraries or the opera as often as in Stuttgart. No wonder, there are simply so many great opportunities here! The people of Stuttgart are always happy to share their enthusiasm for culture with their guests: top-class art museums such as the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart or the Stuttgart Art Museum, the Stuttgart State Theatre with its opera, ballet and drama, which has been showered with international awards, and the Baden-Württemberg State Museum all attract visitors. But there is also an extremely lively independent cultural scene with live music, readings and film festivals.
Germany's only zoological and botanical garden, Wilhelma, is home to around 1,200 animal and 8,500 plant species. Embedded in the backdrop of a listed 19th century park with the flair of 1001 Nights, every visit has the potential to make you feel completely at ease.
Culinary delight with a view
Stuttgart offers wide views: Thanks to its unique topographical location in the ‘Kessel’ (cauldron), the city is surrounded by hills. Above all, this allows great panoramic views over the city, the Neckar and, in good weather, as far as the Swabian Alb. Popular viewing points include Eugensplatz and Karlshöhe.
What is striking: Stuttgart is surrounded by bright green vineyards. The both mellow and steep slopes extend right into the centre and give the city its very own flair. The typical Stuttgart ‘Stäffele’ (stairs) are also evidence of the long winegrowing tradition. The 400 to 600 open-air staircases - nobody knows for sure - used to lead through the vineyards, but today they connect streets and offer helpful shortcuts up the slopes.
But the vines are not just to look at: Together with a Stuttgart wine, the regional Maultaschen (dumplings) taste particularly good. This culinary delight and many more are celebrated in the wine taverns, restaurants, Besenwirtschaft (temporary wine pubs), cafés and bars. Whether rustic Swabian, modern food or fine dining - there is something for all tastes in Stuttgart.
After (or even before!) tasting the wine comes experiencing it! There are scenic wine trails in and around Stuttgart, and the paths around the majestic Grabkapelle (sepulchral chapel) on the Württemberg are an absolute highlight. The viniculture museum in Stuttgart-Uhlbach is also worth a visit - here, in addition to the development of viniculture in the region, you can taste exquisite wines from the winegrowers of the Stuttgart region.
