Beschreibung
The Horb Town Museum displays artistic artefacts from the history of Horb.
The oldest artefacts on display are the excavation finds from the early Merovingian cemetery in Horb-Altheim, on loan from the state of Baden-Württemberg. The deceased were buried with valuable jewellery, magnificent weapons and handcrafted everyday objects. In an impressive archaeological section, these artefacts are made to speak. They tell of migration and successful integration during the Migration Period between the East Germanic peoples and the Alamanni.
The town views from past centuries are a focal point of the permanent exhibition in terms of art history. The charming landscape of the Neckar Valley, the unique silhouette of the town, the idyllic corners and alleyways have inspired many painters. The town takes this as a compliment and shows itself from a wide variety of perspectives.
Particularly worth seeing are the works of the genre painters Caspar Kaltenmoser (1806-1867) and Salomon Hirschfelder (1831-1903), both from Horb, who became famous in Munich. The sketches and paintings enchant with humorous scenes of the rural population of the time.
In the museum rooms, portraits and written documents recall famous personalities from Horb, such as the peasant leader and author of the Peasants' Articles of 1525, Sebastian Lotzer (1490 - after 1525) and the versatile scholar Prince-Abbot Martin Gerbert of St. Blasien (1720-1793).
Relics of Horber's arts and crafts tradition, sacred art and a remarkable collection of night watchman's clocks are also worth a visit to the museum.
Temporary exhibitions use the neighbouring event room of the BürgerKulturHaus.
