Schadeck Castle
The youngest Neckarsteinach castle was built around 1260 and was built directly on the field. The moat between the castle and the hillside was also carved out of the field.
Beschreibung
Bligger V, a grandson of the minstrel, is thought to have built it. The very small and narrow castle complex is dominated by a shield wall almost three meters thick, the top of which faces the mountain side, the only possible side to attack. It replaces the keep found in the other castles. A covered walkway with two smaller watchtowers is still preserved above the shield wall. Access to these towers was only possible via the single opening halfway up the shield wall with the help of (rope) ladders. The stone pitch nose is still preserved above this opening, through which the besieged could pour liquid pitch over the attackers in the event of a defense. A former serpentine path leading directly from the Neckar up to the castle was destroyed in the 19th century by the quarry below.
The Swallow's Nest is the landmark of Neckarsteinach and is fully illuminated in the summer months. The ruin is now owned by the state of Hesse and was restored some time ago at great expense. The ruins can be visited at any time and free of charge and the shield wall can be climbed.
