The jewel on the upper market square
Beschreibung
The town hall was first mentioned in the Horber town charter written around 1420. After the great town fire of 1725, all the houses on the market square were rebuilt on the rubble of the medieval upper town, although the top floor of the town hall, which was begun in 1733, was only added forty years after the devastating fire. In 1860, the town acquired a neighbouring building in which the night watchman's office was set up in addition to the detention room.
However, the new council building and the neighbouring guardhouse only became a special gem on the upper market square when they were painted in 1925/27. The local painter and sculptor Wilhelm Klink created the so-called "Horber picture book" on the gable ends of the two houses, which, with its depictions of coats of arms and portrait medallions, tells a lot about the history of the Neckar town and its important sons. A Biedermeier wedding procession and a procession of craftsmen, in which numerous portraits of the inhabitants of the time can be found, strive towards the flower-wreathed Horber coat of arms. Above the crucifixion scene, an old Christian symbol for the Trinity can be seen below the gable end with the triangular aureole and the Hebrew 'Jahve'. The humorous sayings were written by the Latin school teacher of the time, Dr Stefan Lösch, and the inscriptions Law, Loyalty, Love and Diligence always remind the people of Horber of the most important civic virtues. Thanks to a generous donation from the Brueninghaus Hydromatik company, the Horber picture book was restored by the Culture and Museum Association in 1998 and 2000.
The last restoration of the town hall façade was carried out by the town of Horb in 2018/2019.
