Natural monument old Cemetery
The high value of the old tree population was the reason why the "Old Cemetery", located in downtown Heilbronn, was designated a natural monument in 1937 with an area of 2.6 ha. Burials have not taken place since 1882. Among others, Friedrich August von Alberti (1795-1878), famous geologist and salinist, found his last resting place here. A memorial stone still commemorates him today.
Beschreibung
The old trees with cavities are also an important habitat of a population of the bat species common noctule (Nyctalus noctula). Hibernating animals have already been detected in the tree population there. The high value of the "Old Cemetery", which is now used as a public green space, is preserved with careful maintenance and replanting of trees that have died.
