Beschreibung
The University of Tübingen is home to the largest number of scientific collections at a German university, from astrophysics to dentistry. In its almost 70 specialised collections, it preserves over 130 sub-collections as well as unique treasures from a wide range of disciplines. The Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT at Hohentübingen Castle displays cultural highlights and around 4600 exhibits from seven archaeological and cultural science collections of the university over a long period of cultural history on 2000 m². These include the famous Tübingen armourer, an ancient Egyptian sacrificial chamber and the ancient sculptures in the Knights' Hall (Glyptothek).
Among the outstanding exhibits are the original artefacts from the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ice Age Art". In 2017, UNESCO declared six caves in the Swabian Jura and the Ice Age art found there a World Heritage Site. Around 40,000 years ago, people here carved very lifelike figures of mammoths, wild horses, cave lions and other animals from mammoth ivory. Most of the original artefacts from the Ice Age caves can be seen at Hohentübingen Castle, including the charming "Vogelherdpferdchen" (bird herding horse) and the newly discovered fragment of a flute made from griffon vulture bone.
