Initially consisting only of a mighty keep and a small core castle, the complex was constantly occupied by new owners from Steinach. Landschad Hans Bleikard then rebuilt it into a Renaissance castle modeled on Heidelberg Castle. In the process, the drawbridge and part of the kennel wall disappeared. After the Landschaden family died out, the Barons of Metternich lived here for 100 years. After the transfer to Hesse, the inheritance went to the Barons of Dorth, who Gothicized the castle, i.e. decorated it with battlements and small turrets. Since 1943, the middle castle has belonged to the Barons of Warsberg, and today Johannes Freiherr von Warsberg lives here with his family of seven.
