Lumber Market
The Lumber Market is the "little brother" of the Market Square. Until the 20th century, wood was traded here, and in earlier times it was also the site of the harbor market, where potters and coppersmiths hawked their wares. Today, the steps of the collegiate church are a popular place to sit and meet students in the evening.
Beschreibung
The elongated, rectangular square north of the collegiate church is adorned by the George Fountain with the figure of the oldest church patron of the collegiate church.
In the red house No. 5, the "Buchhandlung Heckenhauer", Hermann Hesse learned the profession of a bookseller from 1895 to 1898 and was subsequently employed for a few months as a "second assortment assistant" (more on this under "Hesse Cabinet").
Memorial plaques commemorating the Nazi era are attached to the wall, the upper part of which juts out over Neckargasse like the prow of a ship. They commemorate the expulsion and murder of TĂĽbingen's Jews and the persecution of the Sinti and Roma. If one looks from the corner of Neckargasse and Lumber Market at the round window in the north aisle of the collegiate church, the martyrdom of St. George can be seen in the depiction of the vulture.
In 2018, Stolpersteine were placed in the cobblestones in front of a large clothing store. They commemorate the expulsion and murder of Jewish citizens in TĂĽbingen during the Nazi regime.
