The half-timbered building, a former teacher's house from the early 18th century, is one of the oldest preserved buildings in Schwenningen and has served as a museum since 1931.
Discoveries made by the Alamanni at the source of the Neckar, rustically furnished farmhouse parlours, historic workshops of shoemakers and clockmakers, typical traditional costumes or ornate clocks and watches... All of this can be found in the museum of local history and clocks in Schwenningen.
The ground floor is dedicated to the early history of Schwenningen, starting with the traces of the first settlers. The focus is on numerous finds from the 'Auf der Lehr' burial ground from the 6th to 7th centuries, with filigree jewellery (replica) from the grave of an unknown noblewoman and the facial reconstruction of a skull standing out in particular. On the second floor, historic farmhouse parlours, some of which date back to the founding years of the museum, provide an insight into the living conditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. Wardrobes, beds, cradles, but also iron plate stoves and an open hearth as well as many everyday utensils are on display. In addition, a shoemaker's workshop, an artisan watchmaker's workshop and a jewellery-covered horse harness represent the craftsmanship that was very much in evidence in the past. In the 18th century, a new era began with the production of cheap clocks for the European market in the Black Forest and in Schwenningen: economically, the clockmaking trade became the all-important pivotal point. Experience the diversity of local production on the threshold of industrialisation, from the typical lacquered shield clock to cuckoo clocks and automatic figure clocks. A visit to the neighbouring treasure chamber, the so-called Hellmut Kienzle Collection, is also highly recommended to marvel at the craftsmanship of high-quality historical clocks from the 17th to 19th centuries from all over Europe.
The Schwenningen Local History Museum is open every 2nd Sunday from 2.30 to 5.00 pm. Short guided tours on changing themes are offered at 3 and 4 pm. Admission is free, registration is not required! Anyone interested is also invited to visit the museum without taking part in a guided tour. The exact dates and topics can be found in the press and on the homepage www.heimatmuseum-schwenningen.de
