Collegiate Church of St. George
On the Neckar front, it towers behind the comparatively small, narrow houses of the old town like a protector. It was built in the Swabian hall church style as a late Gothic church at the behest of Count Eberhard im Barte, the founder of the university, between 1470 and 1493.
Beschreibung
Only the 56 m high church tower ran out of money. Nevertheless, from up here you have a great view over the old town. The stone pointed spire, which once housed the tower keeper's flat, was given a greatly shortened end in 1529.
The choir originally contained the choir stalls of the canons, which are now located in the side aisles. Duke Ulrich, who reformed Württemberg, designated the choir as the Württemberg family burial place in 1550. The 14 stone tombs of the Württemberg dukes who died until 1593 and their relatives can be seen there today. Under the rood screen is the winged altar by the Nördlingen artist and Dürer pupil Hans Leonhard Schäufelein.
The most precious furnishings include the stained glass windows created between 1476 and 1480 in the Strasbourg workshop of Peter Hemmel von Andlau. Goethe wrote of the panes: "The main colours are all there, and in their highest energy and richness." From the choir there is access to the tower, from which there is a view of TĂĽbingen's old town alleys and a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
The Collegiate Church of TĂĽbingen cannot be visited during church services and concerts. The choir and tower are closed during the winter months.
Church open daily 9.00-17.00, tower and tomb from Easter to Thanksgiving Fri and Sun 13.00-17.00 and Sat 11.00-17.00, in the summer vacations daily, except Mon 13.00-17.00
